Tony Asion
Executive Director

Born in Havana, Cuba, Tony grew up in Miami. He was a pilot in the Army and an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA. In 2004 he retired after 20 years of service as a State Trooper in Delaware, where he was the highest ranking Latino in that organizations history. Tony has a Bachelors in Aeronautical Science and a Masters in Criminal Justice. He is a conflict Management Negotiator, a Drug Investigator and developed the Delaware State Police Gang Unit.
Prior to moving to North Carolina, where he is currently the Director of Public Safety at El Pueblo in Raleigh, Tony initiated the creation of Delaware’s 911 system in over 140 languages as well as an 800 number called “La Linea” for callers to be able to communicate with government agencies in Spanish via an interpreter. He also translated the Delaware Drivers Manual into Spanish and developed a summer camp for Latino children.

Tony Has 3 Children. His son is a pilot in the Air Force and is currently in Iraq. His oldest daughter is in Law School at the University of Florida, and his youngest is at the University of Delaware.

Florence M. Simán
Director of Health Programs

Originally from El Salvador, Florence moved to North Carolina with her family in 1980 and attended the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school system. In 1988, Florence received her BA in International Studies from UNC-Chapel Hill and in 1991, her Masters of Public Health, specializing in Health Behavior, Health Education. Since then, Florence has worked on several health-related projects throughout North Carolina. In early 1994, Florence was hired to develop and coordinate a Latino Program at Child Care Networks, a resource and referral agency in Chatham County. Exactly 10 years to the day, Florence left Child Care Networks to become the Director of Líderes de Salud, a Lay Health Advisor program at El Pueblo, Inc. Líderes de Salud is a program funded by John Rex Endowment with the mission of improving the health of Latino children and families in Wake County. Florence is now the Director of Health Programs and is a founding Board Member of El Pueblo, Inc.

Irene Godínez,
Advocacy Director

Irene Godínez is a native North Carolinian of proud Mexican heritage. Growing up in Durham in an immigrant household, as a first-generation US American, gave her a unique perspective on race relations, economic disparities and a desire to pursue social justice. As an undergraduate student she was exposed to North Carolina politics through an internship at the Lt. Governor, Beverly Purdue’s office where she worked alongside the Communications Director. Irene was instrumental in founding a chapter of a Latina-oriented sorority that focuses on the Latino Culture, Latino Community and Hermandad (Sisterhood). She earned a B.A. in Political Science from North Carolina State University and became the first in her family to not only pursue higher education, but also attain it. She simultaneously began her first employment at the North Carolina Office of the Governor in the Office of Hispanic/Latino Affairs while pursuing her Master of International Studies at North Carolina State University, which she completed in 2006. Prior to becoming the Director of Advocacy she worked on El Pueblo’s Public Safety Program, addressing child passenger safety and DWI prevention in the Latino community. Irene is passionate about youth issues, higher education, public policy and studying the impact of globalization in Latin American countries. Irene enjoys spending time with her husband and families, traveling, reading and cooking.

Miguel Figueras,
Gang Prevention Program Coordinator

Miguel “Mike” Figueras arrived in Chicago, Ill from Santiago, Cuba at the age of 3. He lived in Chicago until the age of 13, at which time his family moved to Miami, Florida. South Florida is where Mike made his home until relocating to North Carolina in August of 2006 with his family. He hails from South Florida with invaluable amount of experience in working directly with at-risk students. Mike served for over 10 years as academic advisor/counselor for two of several schools within the Alternative Outreach Educational program in the Miami-Dade County Public School system. Although his role within the organization was vital, Mike is most proud of the difference he was able to make in the students lives and to this day, many former graduates are still in contact with him. Mike hopes to bridge the gap for students and instill the significance of community involvement in preparation for the remarkable things they can achieve.
On a personal note, Mike has been married for over 17 years. He and his wife have 3 sons: the oldest currently a sophomore in high school, the second is an eighth grader and the youngest is in the sixth grade. As a father and a Hispanic man, Mike recognizes the importance and critical role family and community involvement play in the development of our children.

Cecilia Saloni,
Public Safety Director

Cecilia Saloni is an architect born in Caracas, Venezuela. Since she earned her Masters’ studies in Technological Development and Construction at Universidad Central de Venezuela, she has been working with communities and non-profit organizations, in programs to improve the life quality of low-income families through construction and enhancement of low-cost housing. She has been a member of several research teams for projects with universities, non-profit organizations and government offices. She is a founding member of the Habitat for Humanity in Venezuela and a volunteer since its creation in 2000. Since January 2003, Cecilia has resided in Raleigh, NC, where she has participated as a volunteer in various projects and events organized by El Pueblo. On November 1st she joined to the Public Safety team as Research Assistant.

Margarita McAvoy
Special Events & Communications Coordinator

Margarita Correa-McAvoy began her work with El Pueblo as a volunteer early 2002. Later that year she was hired in the position of Office Manager.  In February 2008 she started her new position as Special Events & Communications Coordinator.  Margarita is Colombian. Her education focused on Business Administration. Margarita’s professional experiences are national and international, public and private sector - in Colombia, Saudi Arabia, and the United States - including Bank of America, Morrison-Knudsen, Raytheon Middle East Systems, the Illinois Public School System, and the Xerox Corporation.

Kathryn Kevin
Youth Program Specialist

Kathryn has lived most of her life in Raleigh, North Carolina where she graduated from Peace College in 2004 with B.A. degrees in both Spanish and Liberal Studies with a concentration in Anthropology. As the Higher Education Coordinator at El Pueblo, Kathryn helps high school students set post-graduation goals and works with the youth to develop the skills and knowledge they will need to achieve them. One of her strongest passions has always been supporting children and youth and she has years of experience doing so in a variety of challenging settings. During her 6 years at Peace, she worked with homeless children at StepUp Ministries, a transitional housing program for homeless families. She also took part in an internship to teach Spanish to preschoolers, and taught English to preschool and elementary age children while living in México. Loves traveling and photography and has photo-documented life in the communities in which she lived in Yucatán, México and her visit to Ghana, West Africa, among other places.

Tania Durán-Eyre,
Youth Program Specialist

Originally from El Salvador, Tania moved to North Carolina in 2004. At Universidad Centro Americana - UCA - (Central American University) in El Salvador, she earned a B.S. in Industrial Engineering with a concentration in Organizational Development. Her organizational development work focused on research and development of training projects for corporate entities in leadership, communication, teamwork, and public speaking. She also has experience in economic and community development in rural and urban areas. Tania has been actively involved with youth organizations since 1997 with a focus on leadership development, public policy, and volunteerism. She was one of the founding members of the Youth Network of El Salvador. Tania loves to travel. She has been fortunate enough to participate in several leadership training programs in Estonia, Germany, Sweden and Central America. She has represented El Salvador in the World Youth Festival and in the World EXPO. She lives happily in Carrboro with her husband Dylan. Tania has a passion for dancing and in her spare time teaches salsa in Chapel Hill.

Salomé Alejandra Bascuñán,
Outreach Coordinator

Salomé Alejandra Bascuñán was born in Rancagua, Chile and raised in Miami, Florida. She graduated from Duke University in 2007 with a B.A. in International and Comparative Studies, with a concentration in Latin America/Western Europe, and Political Science. While at Duke, she served as a student leader in various initiatives, campaigns and events geared toward the advancement of the Latino community in North Carolina. Salomé has visited various Latin American countries, studied abroad in Spain and England, as well as traveled to Ireland, The Netherlands and Italy. She has a great passion for culture, history, and politics, which has grown from her extensive traveling. Salomé lives in Durham; however, her home is still Miami, where she enjoys spending time with family, eating good food and relaxing on the beach.

Amanda Giese,
Higher Education Coordinator, AmeriCorps Member

Born and raised in Chicago, IL, Amanda has lived in North Carolina since 2003. After growing up in a neighborhood of Chicago with a large Latino immigrant population and then moving to North Carolina, where the Latino immigrant population is growing rapidly, Amanda has developed a deep love and appreciation for the Latino community and their rich and diverse cultural heritage. She graduated from Duke University in 2007 with a B.A. in International Comparative Studies, with a concentration in Latin America, and Cultural Anthropology. During her years at Duke, she spent two consecutive summers mentoring youth in Bolivia and Peru, and spent much of her spring semester junior year working on a project about the experiences of Latino immigrants to the U.S. That project created in her a strong desire to advocate on behalf of the Latino immigrant community and serve as one of its allies. The project also sparked her interest in El Pueblo, where she is now serving as the Higher Education Coordinator through the AmeriCorps program. She strives to increase Latino students’ access to higher education and desires to work alongside Latino youth in order to encourage them to reach their full potential. In her spare time, Amanda loves to travel. She also enjoys spending her time serving the community alongside other members of her church.

Aida G. Taylor
Education and Community Outreach Coordinator

Mrs. Taylor was born in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. She graduated from law school at the Autonomous University of Yucatan and worked on her master’s in Political Criminology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City. While studying in Mexico City, Aida found time to be the equivalent of an Assistant District Attorney for the State of Mexico, specializing in corporate fraud. Back in Merida, not only was she an ADA working criminal cases, but she also served on a federal-level anti-drug task force. In addition, Aida built a very successful private law practice.
Since 1995, Mrs. Taylor has lived in North Raleigh with her husband and three children, where she owns and runs a language and computer training and consulting company. Her clients have included First Union Bank, John Deere, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Aida is very proud of her Latin roots and is thrilled to be working to improve healthcare in the Hispanic community. Such is her passion for people that she has also traveled to El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua as an interpreter for her church.

Monica Drasal-Hinton
Public Safety Specialist

Originally from  Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mónica moved with her children to  the USA in  2001. She is a Nutritionist-Dietitian who had been working more than 16 years in  Public Hopitals, clinics and the private sector in her country.
 As soon as  she arrived to NC in 2003, she became associated with El Pueblo  Inc. She participated as a health promoter in  the  Líderes de Salud  program funded by John Rex Endowment with the mission of improving the health of Latino children and families in Wake County. Then  she became  the  Liaison of the mentioned Lay Health Advisor program.
Later , El Centro Hispano of Durham  hired  Monica as a  Health Educator  with the mission to develop  and coordinate a Latino Program to prevent Diabetes and Obesity . Additionally  she worked  with the DUI and DWI Prevention Program. She contributed also as a Membership Resources OfficeCoordinator.
 In March of 2008, she joined  the Public Safety team at El Pueblo, Inc.

Her position is  Public Safety Specialist.

Victoria Rose
Office Manager

Born in La Romana, Dominican Republic and raised in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Victoria graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration in 1980. Eight years ago, she moved to North Carolina from Hull England.   She has more than twenty years of experience working in the customer service, medical and entertainment industries. Victoria's professional experiences are national and international, public and private sector. Victoria is fortunate to have several members of her family living locally and one son, Christian at home. In recent years, she has been a member or Board member of several local, nonprofit organizations. Her personal slogan is “Be Happy!” Her favorite poem, “Desiderata”, and her favorite song "Yo Quiero un Pueblo" by Danny Rivera. What makes her happy are; good manners, excellent friendships and organizational teamwork.
