I. Media Literacy 101
Media Literacy 101 provides in-depth
activities on such things as analyzing Hollywood’s use
of tobacco in movies, investigating product placement in movies
and television, examining Big Tobacco’s affiliated companies
and company spending (including politics, promotions, and special
events), describing marketing principles, and assisting in the
creation of media for local markets.
II. Youth Advocacy
Youth Advocacy 101 incorporates time
for students to explore in detail “the power to persuade”
(gaining insight into effective presentations, receiving assistance
in writing scripts for advocacy efforts, and practicing mock
School Board, City Council, or Chamber of Commerce meetings),
and/or focusing on media advocacy (learning about using the
media in advocacy efforts, receiving assistance in creating
public service announcements and writing letters to the editor).
III. Youth Activism and Young People’s
Role in Social Change
The session will focus on young people’s
role in social change both historically and now. We will use
a living history exercise to illustrate this. We will then
use popular theater to show what is happening now that needs
to be changed and what we can do to create justice. We will
then use an exercise to identify what is holding us down and
keep us from working with each other and how we can flip the
script. We will illustrate our personal boulders and pickaxes
and what our collective pickaxes are to make the world we
dream of.
IV. College 101
This interactive and energetic workshop
will give youth information about preparing for college during
high school and the college application process. Youth will
also receive useful resources for the college preparation
process and be updated on current policies regarding the admission
of undocumented students into institutions of higher education.
