El Pueblo is continuing our successful Comunidad Sana: Latino Breast Cancer Education Program, which has been funded by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure since 2002. This project targets new immigrant Latinas living in the expanded Triangle area through culturally and linguistically-appropriate comprehensive efforts raising breast cancer awareness, highlighting the importance of early detection and helping Latinas diagnosed with breast cancer navigate the health care system.
These comprehensive efforts include education and outreach, focused media campaigns, and linking Latinas to existing breast-health related services in their region. Comunidad Sana also provides technical assistance to health and human service providers interested in learning about how to better serve Latinas. In collaboration with Wake County Human Services in Raleigh, Comunidad Sana organizes and hosts Fe, Amor y Esperanza, a support group in Spanish for Latinas diagnosed with breast cancer. This group meets the second Saturday of every month at El Pueblo, Inc. (4 N. Blount Street, Suite 200, Raleigh, NC) and has been a group that not only provides opportunity for Latina survivors to make friends and to receive emotional support but also for Latinas to find answers to their questions and to learn about breast-cancer related resources. |
The ten counties being served through this program include: Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnson, Orange, Vance, and Wake counties. These counties have been selected based on their Hispanic population and on the priority level determined by the community needs assessment of the Komen NC Triangle Affiliate Service Area.
The Comunidad Sana Educational Campaign is devoted to collaborating with agencies, other nonprofits, faith-based communities across the 10-county area. Our program activities include:
- Conducting workshops in Spanish about the importance of early detection of breast cancer;
- Participating in educational community fairs/festivals to promote awareness of breast cancer and early detection and to provide informational handouts in Spanish;
- Developing culturally and linguistically appropriate educational and marketing content for community presentations;
- Providing training and technical assistance to agencies and providers on Comunidad Sana campaign issues;
- Assisting Latinas in navigating the health care system; and
- Collaborating with other organizations to support the mission of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure – NC Triangle.
Please join us at this year’s La Fiesta del Pueblo on September 6th and 7th at the Health and Public Safety Fair at the NC State Fairgrounds.
