
¡Leamos
Juntos! (“Reading Together!”) is an innovative
and
comprehensive
family literacy program addressing the literacy needs of low income,
low literacy, first generation, limited-English-proficiency Latino
families with children ages 0-5, made possible by the support
of Wake County Smart Start, Inc.
¡Leamos
Juntos! seeks to provide literacy training and literacy
enhancement activities for Latino parents and their children,
birth through 5 years of age and not yet in Kindergarten.
¡Leamos
Juntos! - linguistically and culturally-appropriate community
sessions emphasize the importance of family literacy
¡Leamos
Juntos! consists of 4 classes for a total of 6 hours
and is offered in various locations throughout Wake County, in
homes, schools, churches libraries and areas convenient to and
frequented by Latino families
¡Leamos
Juntos! provides one to one assistance through home visits
and provides assistance to families struggling with the English
language and/or literacy.
¡Leamos
Juntos! Incorporates community education and capacity
building as means to supporting family literacy and to strengthen
families. .
¡Leamos
Juntos! utilizes a train-the trainer leadership model,
which trains community leaders to serve as peer-educators and
has been proven successful in other El Pueblo programs. The program
uses various strategies to increase Latino families’ literacy
and involvement in literacy activities with their children and
to contribute to Latino children’s school readiness.
¡Leamos
Juntos! in collaboration with Wake County Public Libraries
sponsored 8 multicultural, family events to promote art, and cultural
events, with emphasis in bilingual literacy, this is an expansion
of El Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros,
which was so successful this past April 30.
