The National Center for Education Statistics found that
in 2004, only 24 percent of Hispanics, ages 18 to 24 were enrolled
in colleges or universities, compared to 42 percent of Whites between
those ages.1 The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities
reported that as of 2003, only 11.4 percent of all Hispanics over
25 years old had completed a college education while 70.4 percent
had never attended college.2 Latino students continue to face barriers
to higher education due to a variety of issues including financial
difficulties, immigration status, and a lack of knowledge of the college
preparation process and college entrance requirements. El Pueblo established
the Higher Education Program to address these issues and improve Latino
students’ access to higher education. http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2007/minoritytrends/figures/figure_23_3.asp
