PUBLIC SAFETY PROGRAM
The goal of Nuestra Seguridad is to reduce the disproportionate
amount of highway safety fatalities among Hispanic drivers in
North Carolina, by developing innovative and vibrant messages
to prevent drinking and driving, to educate the community on the
use of car seats, and seat belts.
One of the major efforts of Nuestra Seguridad is the development
and distribution of culturally appropriate bilingual materials.
Providing information and child safety seat training throughout
the state to members of the community, service providers and advocates,
is also an important part of the campaign. For more information
about Nuestra Seguridad, please contact Cecilia Saloni at
cecilia@elpueblo.org.
A.G.A.P.E.
Program
We have received a grant from the O.J.J.D.P. (Office of Juvenile
Justice & Delinquency Prevention) for the implementation of
the A.G.A.P.E. (Adolescent Gang Awareness & Prevention thru
Education) program. The A.G.A.P.E. program is designed to empower
middle and high school students in wise decision-making, as well
as enlightening them on the consequences of their decisions. Youth
empowerment will result from the internalization of A.G.A.P.E’
curriculum, which encourages them to become responsible members
of their community by: setting goals for themselves, resisting
pressure, learning how to solve conflict and understanding the
impact of gangs on their quality of life. In the middle schools,
there is a six-class program that culminates with a graduation
ceremony where students will be presented with certificates for
their successful completion of the program. By the end of the
program students will be able to discern between the myths and
realities surrounding gang life and will possess the tools necessary
to resist gang pressure. In the high schools, service clubs will
be implemented providing activities and social support. The clubs
will also give back to the community by having service club projects
throughout the school year.
The goal of AGAPE is: To reduce gang activity by educating a select
group of students on the consequences surrounding and stemming
from gang involvement.
