El Pueblo for Abortion Freedoms

North Carolina’s Latine community wants Abortion Care for all!

Latines thrive when we control our own bodies, lives, and futures. This means making our own healthcare decisions, including abortion, birth control, and maternal care, as we have for centuries. Abortion bans—from Mexico and Argentina to North Carolina—are just another way politicians try to control us and take away our power. In 2023, the North Carolina legislature pushed through an extreme abortion ban. Since then, we have been working to minimize the damaging effects of this abortion ban on our community, who already faces significant barriers to accessing health care such as transportation, financial resources, language barriers, and immigration status.
We know that abortion care has been practiced by different names throughout generations in our community, as taboo as it may have been in the past and present to speak about it, our future now depends on our ability to recognize that abortion care is our right.

Latines have always had abortions. No lawmaker should have more power over our bodies than us.

La Marea Verde or the “Green Wave” Movement has long advocated for expanded abortion access in Latin America. Recently, it has swept through the region and won abortion rights in the home countries of many of our families who now reside in the U.S. where we’ve been experiencing nationwide restrictions on our reproductive rights. In Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia abortion has been decriminalized or even fully legalized because of this movement. This is the power of our people coming together to fight for control over our own bodies!

We should be able to decide what’s best for ourselves and our families. Politicians in Raleigh shouldn’t have a say in our pregnancies or get to control our bodies. The decision whether to have an abortion should belong to us – not them.
