Raleigh, NC- Senate Bill 153 has been approved on the Senate floor with 28 For, and 15 Against and moves to the House of Representatives. Through this bill, lawmakers seek to force more state agencies such the Department of Public Safety, Highway Patrol, and others to collaborate with federal immigration officers in the detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants.
Representatives of the local immigrant rights’ organization, El Pueblo, were at the NC General Assembly when the bill was heard on the Senate Floor and the organization has responded to the advancement of this bill with the following statement:
“Following the lead of extreme anti-immigrant policies at the federal level, now our state senators have moved through a bill that would harm immigrant communities, SB153. Through this bill, lawmakers seek to force more state agencies to collaborate with federal immigration officers in the detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants.
SB153 is an extreme state bill that seeks to violate not only state’s rights, but to cause great harm to our immigrant communities.
The time to act is now! We are calling on our allies, our community to use your power to hold your lawmakers accountable, tell them that you support immigrant communities. Immigrants are our neighbors, coworkers, friends, loved ones, members of our community, and more than scapegoats for extremist politicians.”
The organization is asking community members who wish to voice their support, reach out to the representatives via this form: https://secure.everyaction.com/-6DYGSFdvUSdl2HDrTNPYA2
