Raleigh, NC – The nonpartisan organization El Pueblo celebrates the high turnout of North Carolina voters in the November 5 general election and their decision to vote for a better balance of power in the NC state government.

The election result leaves a state legislature where no party has a super majority capable of overturning governor vetoes, which will allow for dialogue and consensus needed to democratically pass better policies for the well-being of all North Carolina residents.

This decision by voters comes after almost two years in which a legislative supermajority imposed a series of laws restricting basic freedoms and rights such as reproductive health, public education, and access to voting, particularly affecting minority communities such as Latino immigrants and LGBTQ communities.

El Pueblo, who has advocated for these communities during legislative debates and in their work, celebrates the fact that voters have expressed their opposition to these restrictive policies at the polls and voted to re-establish a democratic system of checks and balances where state government power is shared, and all voices are heard in government decision-making.
