FamiliasSeguras
At El Pueblo, we believe every family deserves safety, dignity, and peace of mind—no matter their immigration status. The Familias Seguras (Safe Families) guide is designed to help immigrant families in North Carolina prepare for emergencies, including detention or deportation. Below, you’ll find the most essential information to help you take action today.

Why It Matters
The Safe Families guide is more than just a Guide—it’s a tool for empowerment. It helps families:
- Understand their constitutional rights, regardless of immigration status.
- Prepare for emergency situations such as detainment or deportation.
- Protect children, pets, finances, and other critical assets.
- Navigate interactions with law enforcement and ICE.
Steps to take
Know Your Rights
Everyone—regardless of immigration status—has rights protected by the U.S. Constitution. If you’re stopped by ICE or the police:
- You have the right to remain silent.
- You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status.
- You do not have to let ICE into your home without a signed warrant from a judge.
- You do not have to sign any documents without speaking to an attorney.

Make a Family Plan
If something unexpected happens, being prepared makes all the difference. Here’s how to start:
- Choose a trusted caregiver for your children and pets.
- Talk to your child’s school and authorize someone to pick them up.
- Create an emergency contact list—and make sure each family member has a copy.
- Write down important details about your children, including medical needs, schools, and legal documents.

Powers of Attorney
A power of attorney is a legal document that allows someone you trust to make decisions for you if you’re detained. This includes:
- Caring for your children
- Managing your bank accounts or home
- Handling your car or other property
Always speak with a trusted attorney before signing. It’s a powerful tool—but only in the right hands.

Get an ID
Even if you’re undocumented, it’s important to have a form of ID. Options include:
- A passport from your home country
- A consular ID (like the Matrícula Consular)
- A FaithAction or community ID (El Pueblo issues these in Wake County)
