In Response to Recent Political Violence

Raleigh, NC— Amid a global pandemic, fueled by the words of encouragement at a rally from Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump Jr. and Donald Trump himself, a mass of domestic terrorists overtook the nation’s capital building on the day our elected representatives were to certify Joe Biden as the next president of the United States of America. Yesterday, millions of American watched as these rioting fascists strolled into the capitol building in a grotesque display of white supremacy. To say this is un-American is to forget out nation’s history, but to let this act of terrorism go by without repercussion is to disregard our nation’s future. This is something that at least seven of our state’s representatives seem to be fine with. The far right extremists that organized yesterday did not do so unaided or blindly, they were motivated by months of lies from right wing media, representatives, and the president himself stoking the fires of their rage with the rhetoric of “stolen election” and “mass voter fraud”. Though time and again these claims were disproven by US courts. At the time of the breach, the Senate and the House were debating objections to Arizona’s electoral votes and while some lawmakers who had threatened to derail the counting of the Electoral College votes recanted, there were several NC representatives who did not.

NC congressional reps that voted in favor of objection to Arizona’s election results (5):

Rep. Dan Bishop (R)

Rep. Ted Budd (R)

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R)

Rep. Richard Hudson (R)

Rep. David Rouzer ®

NC congressional reps that voted in favor of objection to Pennsylvania’s election results (7):

Rep. Dan Bishop (R)

Rep. Ted Budd (R)

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R)

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R)

Rep. Richard Hudson (R)

Rep. Greg Murphy (R)

Rep. David Rouzer (R)

It is on our NC Representatives to do what is right by their constituents and nation and it is up to us, their constituents, to be relentless when they don’t. A message for the community: the power is in you, what happened yesterday was a failed act of terrorism and hate did not win. We must make sure that those who are responsible for this violence are held accountable- not only those who participated in the action yesterday but also the representatives who continue to encourage their actions.
